Will Sven Schulze be the next Minister-President of Sachsen-Anhalt?

Sven Schulze enters the September 6 Sachsen-Anhalt election with rough headline numbers. Surveys put the AfD at 40 to 42 percent against a CDU stuck at 22 to 23 percent. On paper that gap looks decisive. But German state elections are won on coalition arithmetic, not raw vote share. Every mainstream party has already ruled out governing with the AfD. That firewall is the whole story. Current polling does not support the AfD winning an outright majority of Landtag seats once the five-percent threshold trims smaller parties. Unless that changes, the AfD stays locked out of power regardless of finishing first. That leaves Schulze, who assumed office after Reiner Haseloff stepped aside, as the only figure with a plausible path to a governing majority or a tolerated minority arrangement with the SPD, Greens or others. The counterargument matters. A CDU result in the low twenties leaves Schulze weakened. Coalition partners could in theory push for a different face, and negotiations may drag for weeks past the vote. But no rival party has anywhere near his structural claim to lead a government. Short tenure aside, he remains the default anchor the moment the AfD is excluded. The single thing to watch is whether final seat projections put the AfD at or above an outright majority. Short of that, and short of any mainstream party breaking its no-coalition pledge once results land, Schulze is the man most likely to be sworn in.
