The largest tremors USGS has attributed to Mexico so far this month sit well below the threshold in question: a magnitude 5.3 event off the coast of Michoacan on September 14, and a magnitude 4.6 quake 125 kilometers southwest of La Esperanza on September 18. Neither comes close to the magnitude 6.0 mark required for this question to resolve toward an earthquake occurring. A magnitude 6.5 event near Puerto Madero does appear in USGS records, but it is logged with an origin time in July, not September, so it cannot count toward this month's window regardless of its size. That leaves the official catalog, as reviewed through late September, without a qualifying event. Mexico sits along one of the world's most seismically active margins, where the Pacific plate's interactions with North America regularly produce quakes above magnitude 6.0, so the possibility is never negligible. Still, with the bulk of September's data already in and the strongest recorded shocks falling roughly a full magnitude unit short of the threshold, the month is leaning toward closing without a qualifying event. A handful of days remain before the window closes, and USGS listings can take time to firm up as networks review waveforms and finalize magnitudes. The single thing to watch is whether any late-month aftershock sequence or a sudden rupture along the subduction zone pushes a preferred magnitude to 6.0 or beyond before the reporting deadline. Absent that, the record so far points toward a quieter month than the region's long-term seismic history might otherwise suggest.
