Eritrea invades Ethiopia by October 31?

Multiple sources told AFP that Eritrean troops crossed the border and were positioned around Adigrat, some 115 kilometres north of Mekelle, and were pushing south. Residents in Adigrat gave a similar account, reported on 7 October. That is the strongest case for a Yes, and it is a serious one. But a crossing is not the same as holding ground. The question needs a military operation that established control over part of Ethiopia, backed by a consensus of credible reporting. Ethiopia's foreign minister accused Eritrea of deploying infantry and mechanized units in recent weeks. His letter did not identify the occupied areas or give evidence. Eritrea denies the incursion, and reports indicate it could not verify it independently. The picture also moved against a lasting occupation. A witness said Eritrean forces appeared to be retreating north after strikes, as AFP reported on 9 October. Separately, a conflict analysis group said it could not confirm claims that Eritrean troops had increased their presence in Tigray. That is why the forecast leans toward the invasion not being confirmed by 31 October. The early-October episode looks murky, contested and possibly reversed. The rules also exclude operations that stay on the ground for under 48 hours. The risk is real, though. Eritrea has told the UN Security Council that Addis Ababa's accusations amount to a declaration of war, and fears of all-out war are rising. A fresh push across the border, or later credible confirmation that the earlier push took and held territory, would change this quickly. Watch for independent reporting that names specific towns under Eritrean control.
